Title: Unix Systems Programming: Communication, Concurrency and Threads, Second Edition Publisher: Prentice Hall PTR Authors: Kay Robbins, Steve Robbins Rating: 5/5 At first I wanted to buy 'Advanced Programming in the UNIX(R) Environment by W. Richard Stevens' - I've read that it's very good - but it's a little old (from 1992) and I looked for another. The book is very easy to read, the code examples are almost always complete, so that you can compile and run them. The exercises are from the reality and help the reader to understand and to learn the stuff of the book. There are many additional information, spreadsheets and graphics. You only should have some experience in writing C code...

Title: Dreamweaver MX 2004: The Missing Manual Publisher: Pogue Press Authors: David McFarland Rating: 5/5 I love the Missing Manual series of books and this is one of the best. I'm an avid Dreamweaver user, and The Missing Manual has made me much better with it. Although this book can be a little wordy it's worth reading every word from beginning to end...it's packed with great info!

Title: Professional SQL Server 2000 Programming (Programmer to Programmer) Publisher: Wrox Authors: Robert Vieira Rating: 4/5 This book is actually really good. I thought Database programming and design would be one of the most boring things I've ever studied in my life, but with this book it was actually quite interesting. They would do well to trim off about 200 pages, but otherwise it's good. I don't like the fact that the book holds your hand so much, but I guess it's understandable since the target audience is people who have never done any database programming. If you're looking for a good introductory book to dealing with SQL Server from a non API standpoint (as in dealing directly with the Enterprise Manager, etc), then you can't really go wrong with this book.

Title: Beginning Visual C++ 6 Publisher: Wrox Authors: Ivor Horton Rating: 5/5 This book is actually 2 books in one cover which can be purchased separately. The first is a tutorial on C++ and the second on Visual C++ and MFC. Even though I have studied C++ a bit I thought I would buy this one for a review (and to cover what I didn't already know). I found the C++ tutorials to be excellent. Probably the best of any computer related book I've read. I was able to easily follow the topics that were grouped in logical order. All examples were concise and found no errors which weren't immediately obvious. I've just begun the Visual C++/MFC sections of the book (though I've skimmed it a bit). These look to be a great start with the foundation presented from the previous chapters. This will probably not be your last book on the topic but will certainly get you going in the right direction. This book has made me seek out other books by Mr. Horton and strongly consider Wrox. The book is pretty big but there's lots of info there and lots of good examples. Even though I'm a programmer by profession, I consider myself a C++ beginner and couldn't imagine a better resource for learning MS Visual C++.
