Title: Version Control with Subversion

CVS must die. Long Live Subversion.

Before Subversion appeared on the scene, software developers had two equally evil choices for Version Control. CVS which is open source, but rather limited and broken; or commercial systems which are generally closed, use propriety storage formats, and notoriously hard to migrate away from.

'Version Control with Subversion' is highly recommended for the following folks:

1. Anyone interested in how version control works
2. People new to version control or Subversion
3. Experienced Subversion users / software developers

The book is extremely well written and organized. The authors are knowledgable (they wrote Subversion itself), and unlike many other technical authors, are able to clearly and concisely (and humorously!) explain the subject matter.

The book begins with an introduction to the ideas behind Version Control. From there, subsequent chapters begin explaining how to use Subversion with 'real world' examples. Later chapters cover repository setup, administration, and customization. The excellent reference materials in the Appendices will keep this book close at hand.

I highly encourage anyone involved in software development to check out Subversion and read this book.

I'd Be Lost Without Book; Don't Take Illustrator Without It

People told me Illustrator was easier to learn than Photoshop. Were they wrong! Or maybe they didn't know I'm bad at math because Illustrator is based on bezier curves, vector shapes, math and geometry. It is about as different from Photoshop as a program can be except that they look the same when you first open them up. Just try "drawing" (and I use that word loosely) a curve in Illustrator with the pen tool and you will instantly recall everything you ever hated about high school math. However, if you loved math, this may be YOUR program. This book deserves 5 stars simply because I would be utterly lost without it. I'm taking Illustrator Part II right now at the college where I teach and I still can't move off this book and into a more complex text. I tried moving into the Adobe Classroom in a Book and very quickly found myself unable to do anything in the exercises. I am learning this program very, very slowly and I need an extremely visual, full color approach that spells out every step to me, skipping nothing, assuming nothing. This book does that. I'm very slowly improving in the program. I used it in taking Illustrator Part I (it was not the required text which I didn't even buy) and got an A in the first course yet I still can't move into a more complex book. In this course I have to make an entire calendar for 2003, draw it, and I hope to have this book mastered by the end of it and then, finally, move onto a more complex text. I'm not counting on it though.

Do not buy!!!

This book is an overview. It does not cover the details that are required for CISSP. I found more helpful resources (PDF, PPT, doc)) on the internet free of cost.

Save some money and buy Shon Harris's or Wiley's Exam Prep Guide instead. That is what I did.
