Title: An Introduction to Database Systems (Introduction to Database Systems)
Publisher: Addison Wesley Longman

Get your coffee ready...

This is not Database for Dummies! The word introduction is a bit misleading to say the least and the words used are not the one you read in everyday life. If your are new to relational databases, you should read this book slowly (maybe one chapter per week). When you encounter a word or concept that you don't understand, go on the web or try an other book and find information about that subject. Then continue your reading. Reading this book is like creating a good database design: It's not easy, it is tiresome and a lot of time you will be discouraged. But in the end if you persevere it will be worthwhile.

Classic work - but in series need of updates as time goes on

I cannot fathom a guess as to how many times the books in this series have saved my in project work over the years. The only drawback with this series is that some publisher should endeavor to keep them up to date. Serious Unix system programmers must have copies of the complete series.

Title: Programming Microsoft Visual Basic .NET Version 2003 (Book & CD-ROM)

Best Visual Basic .NET book so far ...

Let me just say that I have tons of Visual Basic .NET books which include my previous beloved Applied Microsoft .NET Framework Programming in Microsoft Visual Basic .NET (what a mouth full) that also author by Mr. Francesco Balena together with Jeffrey Richter.
Well, I don't know why I waited so long before getting Programming Microsoft Visual Basic .NET by Francesco Balena. It has something to do with the fact that I already have a copy of the Framework programming book, or so I thought.
Let's just say after reading countless books on the framework and the .NET idioms etc I still find the concepts somewhat elusive, until one day I accidentally flipped throught this book and it instantly made all the concepts clear to me. I put this book in the same category as Mr. Ted Pattison's outstanding Programming Distributed Applications with COM+ and Visual Basic 6.0 book.
I got to go study now, but will write some more after I'm through with it.
Thanks Mr Balena, and keep playing that Jazz saxophone. By the way, I am a Jazz guitarist as well.
