Title: Ethereal Packet Sniffing Publisher: Syngress Authors: Angela D. Orebaugh, Gilbert Ramirez Rating: 2/5 While this is an interesting book, its problem is that it is already out of date. It seems that it was written at a time when the user interface was undergoing lots of churn. For example, on page 47, figure 2.1 is out of date, as the menu items have changed and the toolbar now has more items. On Page 146 and 147 the authors attempted to deal with changes in the GUI, and show us what the new print dialog box will look like, however, that version is also out of date. On Page 153, Figure 4.19 is out of date. On Page 155, Figure 4.21 no longer exists. Page 156, Figure 4.22 is out of date. Page 162, Figure 4.31 is out of date, and so on. Further on, Page 180, Figures 4.49 and 4.50 are also out of date, and it would have been nicer to show some real-life examples of problems one can spot with the Time Sequence Graphs and some explanation of how socket layer stuff relates to what you might see on the wire. So, I am not sure this book is worth buying. Perhaps wait for the update.

Title: PHP and MySQL for Dynamic Web Sites: Visual QuickPro Guide Publisher: Peachpit Press Authors: Larry Ullman Rating: 4/5 Very clear and consise and great examples that you can easily translate to work you're doing. I already have half a dozen ideas for some sites I'm working on now. One minor (actually major) quibble. Could we have at least used current HTML standards in the examples in the book? I mean tables have been depreciated for at least a couple of years now...

Title: The Code Book: The Science of Secrecy from Ancient Egypt to Quantum Cryptography Publisher: Anchor Authors: SIMON SINGH Rating: 5/5 I'm a software programmer and I enjoy reading scientific journals from time to time. This book combines both: deep scientific understanding of the problem and very nice style of describing complicated things in plain language.I'm sure you will enjoy it.

Title: 1001 Things You Always Wanted to Know About Visual FoxPro Publisher: Hentzenwerke Publishing Authors: Andy Kramek, Marcia Akins, Rick Schummer Rating: 5/5 I note that one reviewer didn't like it because it spent too much time on showing the reader how to do things. Andy and Marcia (now husband and wife, by the way) have long been towers of strength in the CompuServe support Forums. This book shows their understanding, not only of VFP, but of us poor geeks out in the real world trying to figure out how to make it work. Structured code, good programming habits, and incorporation of OOP is here with us now, here to stay. Andy and Marcia guide the user into the methods of using these resources with example after example. I've met some people who can sit down and read a book like this from cover to cover before touching the keyboard. They are theoretical learners, and more power to them. I'm the other kind of guy. I need to get my mitts on the keyboard as soon as possible and try things out. This book is exactly what I need. At this moment it sits on my shelf with no less than 8 bookmarks in it. Andy and Marcia's influence may be seen through all my code. Ultimately, this 67 year old geek must thank Andy and Marcia for the fact that, at an age when most old guys are retired, I am still gainfully employed, and generously paid. This is the best kind of bargain!
