Title: Mastering Windows Server 2003
Publisher: Sybex Inc

Decent, but not great like the older Mastering Guides

The older guides were better. This one wasnt great, but it was better than the Dummies guide which was pure junk. This book because of its enormous size and lack of flow really just kills you, but its pretty good if you want to nail down Windows Server 2003, IF you can keep the book in your hands long enough to digest it. Its just too long and drawn out. So far though, out of the 4 books I read, this one is rated number 2. Dummies, was last. Next up, I am reading the Delta guide and will post on that in a month. Hope this helps.

Title: USB Complete: Everything You Need to Develop Custom USB Peripherals
Publisher: Lakeview Research
Authors: Jan Axelson
Rating: 5/5
Customer opinion - 5 stars out of 5
Used correctly, a great resource

In order to really get the full value out of this book, you need to understand what it is. It's a conversational book with an easy-to-read style and clear examples. What it is intended to do is explain the hardest-to-understand parts of the USB Standard, fill in common problem areas such as host programming, and get you comfortable thinking about the USB structure. It does not contain every nuance of the USB Standard; in fact, the book would be very confusing if it did. This book is more of a companion or guide to the USB documentation. It's like having an experienced friend nearby to explain things to you in order to get over the rough spots, and recommend hardware and programming tactics that worked for them. Using this book, you can very quickly determine what your target application will require, and zero in on the structures you will have to design as well as the relevant portions of the USB Standard. It helps you to actually *understand* the structure of your application, instead of memorizing routines and not knowing how they really work. I used the first version of this book a while back, and the second version is just as good but with more of today's technology. Oh, and don't cheap out and get the electronic version...the book version is very well laid out and much easier on the eyes. Plus it looks more impressive on the bookshelf. ;-)

Title: Cisco Router Firewall Security
Publisher: Cisco Press
Authors: Richard Deal
Rating: 5/5
Customer opinion - 5 stars out of 5
Access This Book!

Cisco Router Firewall Security by Richard A. Deal delivers exactly what the title says: using a Cisco router for every possible perimeter security scenario. The book is written for someone who has at least an intermediate level knowledge of Cisco router and switching technologies. Advanced security consultants may want to go to Chapter 21, Case Study Configuration, and refer back to the previous chapters for more explanation when needed. However, those responsible for network security should read the entire book to be familiar with all of the latest security features that Cisco routers are capable of as well as a number of vulnerabilities that should be hardened, when possible.
Deal fills in much of the lacunae of Cisco IOS configuration that are left out of certification handbooks. His sprinkling of many anecdotes from his personal experience makes the book immensely practical. For example, the author points out that Reflexive Access Control Lists can be used as a less expensive substitute for Content Based Access Control when filtering traffic for a few dozen users.
Deal's book will prepare you to deal with special situations where company policy demands something different than what a firewall in a box solution offers. As he shows you how to accomplish Intrusion Detection, Content Filtering, Security Logging, Virtual Private Networking, Denial of Service Prevention, and Access Management solutions with Cisco routers, he points out when these features should be used with a router or dedicated equipment, like the PIX firewall.
I give Deal 5 stars for the layout and structure, which includes notes, cautions, tables, and configurations. But what I found most valuable was his many real life illustrations from his consulting business.

A very useful book despite all the errors!

Let me just get it out of the way by mentioning first that this book contains many errors - perhaps more than an average technical book. However, most are typographical and do not degrade the value of the book that much.

Having said that, the coverage of all the exam topics in this book is nothing short of superb! The explanations are detailed, clear and with numerous examples. For the purposes of the exam, I would go as far as to say that you may not need any other supplemental material (which is very rare for a study guide)!

This book covered all but 2 questions on my 70-229 exam. One of them was regarding the full syntax of OPENXML and the other was regarding Replication.

The questions at the end of the chapters are very similar to those on the test (again, rare for a study guide). If you can answer most of those questions correctly, you will do well on the real exam.

All in all, in my opinion, this is the best book out there for the 70-229 exam.
