The Bible of Swing

Two years ago, the JavaRanch reviewer, Anmarie Ziegler, wrote this about the first edition: "Overall this is an excellent book, and I would recommend it for the intermediate to advanced Swing developer." The same can be said of the second edition of "Swing". This edition has been updated to bring it up to Java 1.4 with new examples, new components, and three new chapters. You should note that this book is not for beginners. If "threads", "anonymous classes", or "event handling" are foreign words to you then you should go over the basic Swing chapters in a Java intro book such as "Beginning Java 2" by Ivor Horton. If you consider yourself at least an intermediate Java programmer and are comfortable with the basics of the AWT and you want to learn Swing very well then you are ready for this book. The authors have written the Bible of Swing. This book covers not just the basics of Swing but goes beyond that to teach you how to build your own Swing components. The cover states that the book contains, "production quality code" and this is exactly what it contains. You will find no simple "Hello World" examples but instead demonstrations of how to make use of the real power of Swing. The coding samples you will find in this book are extremely detailed and well commented. If you want to learn how to be a competent Swing developer then you should get this book.

Excellent non-mathematical book on algorithms

I bought this book a couple of months ago for use in my DS&A class, and it was a superb resource. This book does just what it says it does, no math or proofs, but clear explanations. The applets provide a great way to actually see how the algorithms work. Overall, this is one of the best DS&A books.

If your serious about making a living using Ae

I Have the videos ...I have the books, they are all collecting dust except for this one. Trish and Chris Meyer are the Ae guru's. I have been using Ae for about 2 yr.s and I have dramatically increased my income because of this book. Now all the :30 and 1:00 commercials I do are done in After Effects. I strongly recommend this book for an intermediate to experienced editor wanting to break into motion graphics and compositing. This book is guaranteed to raise your IQ (and could quite possibly help in raising your income).

Enhance your skills, communicate your vision!

This is an excellent book for many types of people - non-designers, office personnel, individuals, novices, students, and self-made designers.
Although the book may seem simple, there are many words of wisdom and guiding rules that can enhance *any* design. Unlike boring compendiums, this is fresh and fun. It will allow you to take your ideas and designs to the next level, and add both spice and professionalism!
Robin Williams works hard to make a vibrant text and compelling examples. There is just the right mix of technical terminology and easy-to-understand dialogue. With a simple step-by-step formula, you will be able to break down and improve your own work, as well as the work of "professionals."
I highly recommend this to anyone who does any form of print or web communication. This is a whole lot of bang without any bore. It's my gift and reference of choice.
Don't hesitate!
