Title: Professional Crystal Reports for Visual Studio .NET (Programmer to Programmer)
Publisher: Wrox

Skip steps in examples, difficult to follow

The examples in book are difficult to follow. Many intermediate steps were skipped. I am frustrated, trying to follow examples in the book and do not get the results shown on screenshots. I end up searching Google for answers, which I found all of them. If you plan to pay for this book, my recommendation is getting a copy of table of contents and then searching in Google for the contents. The book should mention (or at least refer to) the setup that makes Crystal Reports .NET work, e.g. where & how to set up IIS, virtual directory, etc. E.g., I can't get the screenshot shown in Figure 5-4 because I do not have the required virtual directory setup. Or, I can't get the screenshot in Figure 10-4 (still looking for answer as of writing).

Title: The Adobe Photoshop CS Book for Digital Photographers (Voices That Matter)
Publisher: New Riders Press
Authors: Scott Kelby
Rating: 4/5
Customer opinion - 4 stars out of 5
Worthwhile complement to basic library; but no work-along CD

Once you are a bit comfortable with Photoshop, this tutorial adds a lot of neat, well-illustrated and descriptive tricks (without explaining the why). Probably offers the best resource on Photo Browser essentials (sure liked the contact sheet to fit an archival CD jewel box). And the section on non-destructive dodging and burning with adjustment layer mask, alone, is well worth the admission price; with the pot sweetened by sound approaches to color management and correction. Production is of high quality, and color figures accompany each step.

Yet the content doesn't get the 5 star rating it should, for lack of an accompanying CD with gallery of before-and-after images so you may follow the illustrations in the text step-by-step and find out where you went off-track. It's like doing an appendectomy right after reading an illustrated textbook. The website images take your precious time to download, and then are so highly compressed as to limit their utility in color correction; worse, most are marred by an intrusive and unsightly 'BrandX' water mark - a thoughtless timewaster that detracts from the intrinsic learning value.

Handy to have on hand

Another excellent book from William Stanek. This a wonderful resource; especially for people like me, who are always on the go. From page one to the last, book offers tips and trick at every page. This book has been close on hand since I bought it and will remain for the forseeable future. Mr. Stanek has once again written a valuable book that is easy to use and understand.

Excellent read for non-engineers

Mr. Goralski offers an excellent overview of current SONET architecture as well as future trends (i.e. integration and implications of DWDM technology) and empowers the reader to better differentiate among competing equipment vendors. I would highly recommend this book to professional investors seeking a serious and greater understanding of the telecommunications equipment market.
