Title: Advanced Programming in the UNIX(R) Environment Publisher: Addison-Wesley Professional Authors: W. Richard Stevens Rating: 5/5 This book is a standard for Unix programmers. It covers almost every important system call / feature available. Enough implementation detail is covered to understand how to use Unix system calls efficiently. Networking is the prime weakness of this book; Berkeley Sockets on top of TCP/IP are not covered in this book. Web and other network programmers still need this book, but will also need a complementary networking book

Title: The CISSP Prep Guide: Mastering the CISSP and ISSEP Exams, Second Edition Publisher: Wiley Authors: Ronald L. Krutz, Russell Dean Vines Rating: 2/5 This book will not prepare you fully for the CISSP exam in and of itself as claimed. If you are looking for a single source to pass the CISSP exam, study the CISSP Examination Textbooks, vol. 1 & 2, 2nd edition from SRV Professional Publications. The first volume covers the material, while the second contains 1500 sample questions. People criticize the CISSP Examination Textbooks as unwieldy and at times confusing, and they are, but all the important material is covered, and the sample exam questions are helpful in preparing for the test. So even though they read a bit like a VCR manual, they are very helpful. Knowing the information they cover should allow you to pass the test when combined with your three years of experience. If you can read a second book, and I recommend that you do, read The Information Security Management Handbook, vol. 1, 4th edition compiled by Harold Tipton (often called "The Tipton Book"). It is a bit dated in its material, but puts you in the right mindset to think the way the test does. All in all this book is a good introduction, and covers good information, but it doesn't dig deep enough into each of the domains to fulfill its goal as a one stop CISSP exam guide.

Title: SIP Demystified Publisher: McGraw-Hill Professional Authors: Gonzalo Camarillo Rating: 3/5 I found this book covered too many points on the spectrum. The first half goes over everything BUT SIP. Most people who want to learn the generic SIP structure already know how a simple telephone and data network operates. This takes a little too long to get the the "meat" but from there on gives a pretty good detail of the SIP format for anyone looking at understanding the basic SIP code format. As a fundamentals book for anyone wanting to start learning SIP programming it would be a good reference to have on the shelf. Skip the first half though.

Title: CIO Wisdom: Best Practices from Silicon Valley Publisher: Prentice Hall PTR Authors: Dean Lane, With Members of the CIO Community of Practice, Inc. and Change Technology Solutions, Silicon Valley CIO Round Table Rating: 5/5 The book is a wealth of advice not only valuable to the CIO position but to the executive team and the Board of Directors as well. Fox's chapter on communications is the most enlightened tour of what it takes to build a great IT organization that is in alignment with the internal and external parts of the enterprise. The advice parallels Harvard Professor Kanter's admonition that "communication is the key". Businesses must make the free flow of information and knowledge a priority. If lines of communication are poor, employees at the lower levels feel cut off from the decision-makers at the top. Excellent read!
