Thinking in Java

If your are new to Java or just the whole OOP programming concept, this is the book for you.
Here is my story:
In the beginning of Sept. of 1999 I started read Bruce's Thinking in Java with only a structured programming background. I had previously done some programming in a language called CSP (a Cobal generator) on the mainframe and had some experience with VB and C. A friend and I made a commitment to get java certified by January of 2000 or around then because if we were going to learn java, might as well do it the right way. So, through five month of reading and doing almost every example in the book, I was java certified on January 14. The point I am trying to make is 1. use this book as a launch pad into the java and OOP world, 2. I would recommend learning Java with a friend because it is easier for you to stay focused on the true goal, and 3. do all of the examples in the book. This, obiously is not the only way to learn, however, it was a way that helped me.
Note: I was working full time.
So, I would recommend "Thinking in Java" for beginners and intermediates programmers

This book is a gem

This is the best book I have ever read. The writing style is informal, things are explained clearly. The book deserves 5 stars just on the writing style and clarity of presentation. Professor Griffiths displays a mastery of the subject and makes a beautiful subject even more beautiful. Sure this is not a graduate level book but that does not demean it in any sense to Jackson - the two are aimed at different levels. I am a grad student and I still find this book invaluable. Professor Griffiths deserves an award for this work :)

Some inaccuracies, especially where it counts

Odds are you are buying this guide to complete the game to its fullest. While it will certainly get you closer to completion a lot faster than just running around aimlessly, you should know that there are a lot of errors in it.

It will get you through the missions okay, but the maps leading you to collectible items are horrible. One map has the items marked half an inch to the left of where they actually are. On another the numbers do not match up to the corresponding screenshots AT ALL, and it's the one where you need the screenshots the most. There are numerous other incorrect pictures and descriptions. And the screenshots are tiny! They wasted a ton of space printing artwork from the game, but skimped on the useful stuff.

Also, in several places you can see that they had a slightly different version of the game to work from. Detail on the maps is terrible and does not always match what's on your screen.

If you are looking for a guide I would still recommend it simply because there is nothing else out there. Just don't expect this to get you to 100% completion.

Kudos to Ms. Castro!

Hi all!
I just finished a class in html and used this book as a reference. I found it to be the handiest and constantly referred back to it when it came time to work on projects.
I was amazed at how I could follow the precisely laid out, step by step, processes (especially in the more complex areas of nested frames and tables).
I recommend this book very highly and consider it superior to many of the other software books that I have read, (most at far higher costs too boot!)
