Title: The Rational Unified Process: An Introduction, Third Edition Publisher: Addison-Wesley Professional Authors: Philippe Kruchten Rating: 2/5 There are some good ideas in the book. Overall its sales literature. I should be able to download it from Rational's web site. I don't recommend it unless you have full intentions of buying Rational's developer products.

Title: Java & XML, 2nd Edition: Solutions to Real-World Problems Publisher: O'Reilly Authors: Brett McLaughlin Rating: 5/5 XML and Java, true to the title, provides detailed and broad coverage of XML programming in Java. The chapters on SAX, DOM and JDOM provide a strong foundation for selecting and leverage these libraries at a practical level. The coverage of rapidly emerging XML topics including XML-RPC, SOAP and Web Services is timely and reasonably detailed, providing adequate information to allow these to be practically applied. The author's writing style is easy to read and has a code-centric focus. The numerous examples were intelligently explained without providing detail that someone already familiar with the Java programming language would find verbose and boring. This title is best suited to for those with some background in Java and a general understanding of XML. Assuming this background, this book can help bridge the gap from being a Java/XML programming novice to being a Java/XML programming expert.

Title: Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid Publisher: Basic Books Authors: Douglas R. Hofstadter Rating: 5/5 I was 16 when this book first came out. I read bits and pieces of it constantly from that time until I finally read the whole book from beginning to end when I was 37. By then I had read the whole book several times over, but never sequentially. Many of my personality traits can be traced back to this book: a love of Lewis Carroll, my career as a computer programmer, my interest in robotics and artificial intelligence, and several Bach CD's in my collection (including the Musical Offering). I love this book. I'll leave it next to my son's bed when he's old enough to start understanding it.

Title: CCNA Flash Cards and Exam Practice Pack (CCNA Self-Study, exam #640-801), Second Edition Publisher: Cisco Press Authors: Eric Rivard, Jim Doherty Rating: 5/5 I had to renew my CCNA cert last month so I bought this "Practice Pack". I went through the flash cards twice and they really helped me remember a lot of stuff I forgot and did not know. The CD in the back had some simulations which really helped me on the exam. I bought Boson CCNA exams, but I felt the flash cards and the questions on the CD where way better than Boson and where closer to what I saw on the exam. I passed the exam with a 870 and felt I could of only used this practice kit as my only test prep. Overall a great product.
