A good jump start for the casual VB programmer as well

There are others who have reviewed this book and stated that it is geared only toward the most novice programmer. I would have to disagree with that statement. The book does a good job of covering the basic differences in .Net over VB / VBA that would be of interest to the casual or intermediate programmer as well.
As the title suggests, there are many "step by step" exercises in the book which provide a great learning tool for those who like "hands on" learning. The book also includes many notations throughout each subject, which provide more information on .Net logic or alternate methods.
I would also like to mention that the writing style of Michael Halvorson lends itself quite well to this type of lesson oriented text. The topics flow well and the subject matter is easily digested as several different levels of experience. I will definitely be looking for more books on the subject of .Net written by Michael as my training progresses.
If you're a professional VB developer who has been coding everyday for several years, this book may not be for you. But for the casual VB / VBA developer at the novice to intermediate level looking to get into .Net, this is a good starting point. If you're unsure that this book (or any book for that matter) will meet your needs, go to your local bookstore, get a cup of coffee, and skim through the chapters. Don't take anyone's word on your specific learning needs because everyone is different in their learning style and level of knowledge.

Now I know why it's mandatory reading at Microsoft

Say what you will about Microsoft, but at least they are trying to solve their security ills, and I can see why this book is required reading for all developers at the company. It's well written, well edited and full of really useful stuff about designing and building secure systems.
It covers all the stuff you'd expect and much more: buffer overruns and how to prevent them, as well as ACLs, least priv, crypto, managed code, tesing, threat analysis, sockets mistakes, installation, web issues and much more.
If Microsoft follows the guidelines in this book, the will succeed if their goal of trustworthy computing.
