Title: Learning the vi Editor (6th Edition) Publisher: O'Reilly Authors: Linda Lamb, Arnold Robbins Rating: 4/5 O'Reilly & Associates, well-known for quality computer references, have once again done a superb job with this manual for vi. This Unix text editor can often be intimidating for those who haven't been exposed to it, but once a bit of time is spent with vi, it becomes second-nature. This book greatly helps in that endeavor. Using this book, in conjunction with making vi my default PINE editor (thereby forcing me to become fluent with it, lest my email use become rather slow and awkward,) provided a huge speed boost in learning the vi editor. Vi is very powerful, and is almost always included on every unmodified Unix install. These items, coupled with the fact that vi doesn't automatically insert line breaks (like pico does) make it one of the most-preferred text editors amongst Unix sys-admins. Not only does _Learning the vi Editor_ cover the essentials, but moves beyond basic editing functions into more powerful features, such as global searches & replacements, customizing the editor, "moving around in a hurry," command combinations, and other advanced vi features. For even better results in using vi, pick up a copy of O'Reilly's _sed & awk_, though it's not necessary for effective vi use. _Learning the vi Editor_ is written in a friendly, casual voice, and Linda Lamb provides what your input and output will look like for most commands, interspersed with comments that put the reader at ease, such as "Qute forboding, isn't it?" followed by reasons not to be intimidated. This book will help just about anyone conquer the mighty vi tool, and will help prove vi's superiority over any other Unix text editor. (Ahem - no offense to the emacs gurus out there.)

Title: Final Fantasy IX Official Strategy Guide Publisher: Brady Games Authors: Dan Birlew Rating: 1/5 Nice try, BradyGames, but this guide wasn't worth a cent. After a few weeks of playing Squaresoft's Final Fantasy IX, I was stumped with the Chocograph's mini-game. Frustrated, I wanted to buy a strategy guide that would help me solve the problem. Unfortunately, I was shocked to see the guide's lackness of quality; the information on chocographs was only a few sentences! As I skimmed through the guide, all it said was "Visit play online for details!". I was disgusted by this [stuff]. Did I just pay $$$ for a guide full of advertisements telling me to visit this website? What if I don't have a computer? What if I'm too lazy to turn on my computer? What if my internet connection runs at 14.4K speed and am dying for a webpage to load? Well that's what the strategy guide is for. Bad guide.

Title: Sams Teach Yourself PHP, MySQL and Apache in 24 Hours Publisher: Sams Authors: Julie C. Meloni Rating: 4/5 Hi - I am the author of this book, and I want to make sure everyone understands where this book comes from. It's parts of three different books, with several new chapters. It's fairly beginner-ish in nature, but you definitely have to have a handle on how the Web works, from an administrative standpoint, to get your brain around the Apache chapters. The MySQL and PHP chapters assume less pre-existing knowledge, and are pretty fun, hands-on and oriented through working through lessons. This is not the be all and end all PHP, Apache and MySQL book -- that would take way longer than 24 hours -- nor is it meant to be. But it will teach the fundamentals of all three things, and provide you with a strong foundation for more advanced books. You can find more info like table of contents, code and errata at thickbook.com. Best, Julie.
