Title: SAP BW: A Step by Step Guide for BW 2.0

Hottest SAP Book in Town !!!

I am a SAP Consultant for FICO for the last few years and I have experience in Data Warehousing projects. Now I have entered into the world of SAP-BIW, with my past experience in DW. I am involved currently in a SAP-BIW project.
SAP- BIW has a Back End called 'Administrator Work Bench', which is all about Data Modelling, Data Targets which leads Info cubes, Info source and Data source. The back end process is all about gathering data from the data sources and put them in BIW thru R/3. The Front End is called 'Business Explorer' and this helps in viewing the data gathered for decision processing.
Critical points about the Book: The Book deals only in Back End processes and it does not teach about Front End, except querying (chapter 5). To know about Front End extensivley, one has to read "SAP BW Reporting Made Easy, 2.0B/2.1C" by SAP Labs Inc. Simplification Group.
Further even in Back End, it is not giving any info abt data modelling or data designing. It merely teaches how to transfer the data from Data source to BIW thru R/3. Regret that, it is not covering complicated transfers. This book is in-complete in many aspects. In other words, the book teaches the core functions required from BIW Consultant for handling the Back end processes.
Positive points: Authors deserve appreciation for having written a book needed in the crucial time, since SAP- BIW is getting implemented in many places. The book is concise and clear in whatever topics they deal with.
I should also say that this book can be useful from beginners to intermediate level. Beginners mean, those who have prior experince in SAP or in Data Warehousing but new to SAP- BIW.
Thanks for reading.

Title: The Protocols (TCP/IP Illustrated, Volume 1)
Publisher: Addison-Wesley Professional
Authors: W. Richard Stevens
Rating: 5/5
Customer opinion - 5 stars out of 5
Illustrated it is

TCP/IP is the most fundamental protocol that drives the whole of the internet. A deep understanding of them is necessary for any wannabe network administrator/programmer/analyst etc.
Richard Stevens TCP/IP illustrated is one of the best books you can ever buy to understand not only TCP/IP but also other fundamental protocols like ARP, DHCP, SMTP etc. The word 'Illustrated' is significant, you actually see the protocols in action throughout this book. There are more pages devoted to examples rather than concepts, which is actually an excellent way to relate to the concepts.
Richard Stevens doesnt just write something, and assume you understood him and believed him in blind faith. He actually shows you what you write and helps you become more analytical in the workings of the internet.
This book is a bit old though, and with Richard Stevens dead, we might not see a revival of this book. It only covers TCP modification till Tahoe and Reno but chapter 24 gives you a more or less good idea about what the future will be like (in which we actually are, by the timeline of this book.)
Overall, if you want to not only learn networks, but feel them, then buy this book.

SQL Queries for Mere Mortals

I have been using MS Access 2000 to develop database solutions for use in sales and marketing departments and needed to go to the next level and develop solutions based on SQL Server, so I was looking for a book to understand SQL queries better and thereby SQL Server. Knowing, that by writing your own SQL queries when working in Access you're able to develop a scaleable application that easily is transferred to SQL Server, the book helped me in this transition since all 5 sample databases included on the CD-ROM is available in both SQL Server 7.0 and MS Access 2000 files.
After an introduction to relational database theory and the SQL language in the first 3 chapters, you'll start learning about queries and each of the remaining 14 chapters includes exercises that will train your skills in writing SQL queries. Throughout the book the authors make use of diagrams to visualize the SQL queries, in the beginning they may seem difficult to understand but as you get used to them you will find yourself reading them faster and faster.
One of the things I learned the most from was the authors use of a 3-step method to write queries: A simple question in plain English to get the needed information from the data goes through a Translation, then a Clean Up, and finally you've got your SQL. With this method not only do you gain confidence but also an insight into the simple mathematical logic on which the queries are based.
To accompany this book and enhance the knowledge you gain from reading it I recommend the following titles: On Access 2000 I recommend John Viescas' "Running MS Access 2000" (ISBN 1572319348), which in my opinion is one of the best books on Access 2000. To strengthen your knowledge on relational database theory and design I recommend: "Inside Relational Databases" (ISBN 354076092X). To learn SQL Server 7.0 I recommend: "Professional SQL Server 7.0" (ISBN 1861002319).
Most people are able to develop a database that contain lots of data, but only few know how to transform these piles of data into useful information by using the powerful tools of SQL queries. With the knowledge from SQL Queries for Mere Mortals you will be well on your way to become one of the few.

Title: Adobe Photoshop CS Studio Techniques
Publisher: Adobe Press
Authors: Ben Willmore
Rating: 5/5
Customer opinion - 5 stars out of 5
Great even for novices and advanced users

Well, I bought this book because of the great reviews it had received, and I gotta say it deserves them. It's so good I read the first 240pp in about 3 days. The first chapter alone will show you how to streamline your workspace to get the most out of Photoshop. By the time you read through to chapter eight, you will have a very solid understanding of some tools that will allow you fix photographs you thought were messed up beyond repair.
Willmore's conversational style makes it easy to understand everything he's explaining, and the images (all in color, unless they're grayscales) clarify whatever confusions may arise. Just be sure to work along with him (using the images in the CD) so you get a feel of the tools he's teaching you how to use.
I have not yet gotten to the part where he teaches you specific "tricks," but I looked ahead and am very eager to get there. I find that highlighting certain parts of the text and rereading them before moving on to the next chapter helps me remember what I just read. This book will definitely turn any beginner/novice into an advanced Photoshopper.
