A real treasure!

I stumbled on this book at Borders while browsing through a dozen or sobooks on the OOA&D, RUP, and the UML. I am not a novice: I have studied thefield and worked in OOA&D for over a decade. I immediately felt thatthis book is a treasure: it is the best overview of the OOA&D, RUP, and XMLthat I have ever read.
While many practitioners have their reasons to favor one approach overanother (RUP, Agile, XP, etc.), this book does not project any bias andcontains the most clear and simple explanation of RUP, its phases, workflows, and the UML. Its language is enjoyable, the examples are just rightto illustrate the points of discussions. It is not an in depth volume, butit is thorough enough to teach you about the most important flows andartifacts, and how to interpret and use them.
If you are tired of reading books filled with vague, useless, and boringdefinitions -- try this one. You will not be disappointed.

A Delightful Book

Dr. Singh's "The Code Book" was delightful to read and seemed well researched and informative. The only errors I found in it were petty ones (and probably placed there intentionally to test the readers.) They are as follows: pg. 256 The word "the" was left out of "...there is ___ problem..." On pg. 268 the word "person" has a space instead of an "r" making it "pe son" And on pg. 324 the word "parable" is used when, in my opinion, the word "paradigm" is a little better when discussing Schrodinger's cat that is both dead and alive at the same time. My views are far too classical on this subject to seriously entertain such a thought without the use of mind altering drugs. ;-) As a strictly personal matter the mention of Plato on pg. 218 instead of Socrates who taught him is something I would change. But I've always been a big Socrates fan and will admit my bias. I hope that when the encryption software my wife and I have developed hits the market within the next year or so that it will find a place of honorable mention in a future book by Dr. Singh. He seems to me to be a genuine gentleman and a scholar who I'd be honored to meet. All the best to you Dr. Singh! Thank you for writing "The Code Book."

Haven't read the book yet, but emailed Steve & he answered!

I haven't read the book yet, but I just bought it. I read the Mr. Nelson's statement (third reveiw listing) and took him up on his offer to email him with questions. He answered very quickly and was very helpful! I figure that any author that makes himself that available, must really believe in his book. Thanks Steve, appreciate your time.

I am NOW a Believer...

I purchased this book in November on the strength of the reviews I read then, and in part to see for myself what this book GEB was REALLY about. People back then were writing some pretty lofty reviews, and I must admit that I was somewhat skeptical... Because of my growing interest in the field of Artificial Intelligence and of human thought in general, I spent about 3 weeks this past December...in COMPLETE awe of the genius of Douglas Hofstadter! The author's ability to relate a meaning of a message in a format that demonstrates the theme of the message itself on so many lexical levels is unlike anything I've ever read before. Not only was I entertained and enlightened with the main topic of "how it is that animate beings can come out of inanimate matter", but also with Doug's temporary jaunts into Zen Buddhism, the nature of meaning and even DNA replication... and then finding out they weren't really extraneous, but all part of the same deep underlying message. BUY THIS BOOK! At minimum, you will enjoy it for the rich genius, and highly articulated vernacular of the author... and at its maximum, you will have found a life changing source of undeniably good literature.
