Title: OCP: Oracle 10g Administration II Study Guide Publisher: Sybex Inc Authors: Doug Stuns, Tim Buterbaugh, Bob Bryla Rating: 5/5 I just passed my Oracle 1Z0-043 test after using this book as my sole study source, in addition to an Oracle installation I set up at home. The book does a great job of covering all the material I encountered on the test.

Title: Learn to Program with Java Publisher: Osborne/McGraw-Hill Authors: John Smiley Rating: 5/5 This book taught me a LOT on Java. I thought that my college calss would cover most stuff, but this book really taught me sooooooo much. The only thing that is slightly annoying is his addiction to one grade calculating program. BUY THIS BOOK!!!

Title: Sams Teach Yourself Perl in 21 Days (2nd Edition) Publisher: Sams Authors: Laura Lemay, Richard Colburn, Robert Kiesling Rating: 1/5 After getting hoodwinked into thinking this was a SOFTWARE PROGRAM to help you learn how to write perl, I tried reading it. (I couldn't return the book-- it was packaged as software and had already been opened) I am a technical writer by trade. Please, Mr. Till. Hire me! Hire someone! You're probably a good programmer, but you know nothing about approaching the subject from the beginner's side. The Introductory chapter discusses headers-- a topic WAY too advanced to start with for the kind of user this book supposes to teach. (Should be included in the book, just not so soon.) I've found the O'Reilly books (Programming Perl and Learning Perl) to be good material if you already know the language, but they don't offer a beginner's approach. Fortunately, they don't pretend to be beginner's books, as this mess did. Overall, a pretty poor book, really messed-up packaging/marketing. Turned me off of Sams' books for a while, at least.

Title: Hibernate in Action (In Action series) Publisher: Manning Publications Authors: Christian Bauer, Gavin King Rating: 2/5 I read this book after a rought time dealing with theprofesional hibernate book. I gave 'Profesional Hibernate'a lousy review - mostly based on the amount of typos and innaccurate technical references when decribing the java language. This book wasa little better - though again, not quite meaty enough for my liking. And not at all 'in action' - at least not real world action. This book would do you well as an introduction to hibernate and, byu the looks of it, is about as good as it gets with Hibernate books. Be careful how much faith you put in these reviews - I know that the authors of these partcular books are posting against each other in a very unprofessional way.
